SERUM CONCENTRATIONS OF INTERLEUKIN-10, -12 AND -17A IN STEVENS-JOHNSON SYNDROME AND TOXIC EPIDERMAL NECROLYSIS

Abstract

Objectives: To investigate serum concentrations of interleukins-10, -12, -17A and their association with the clinical progression of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN).

Materials and methods: There were 48 patients with SJS/TEN; 43 patients with erythema multiforme (EM) and 20 healthy controls (HCs) participated in the study. The patients were examined clinically, and asked about medical history, and saved serum samples. Using fluorescence covalent microbead immunosorbent assay, multiple cytokines were detected simultaneously: IL-10, IL-12, and IL-17A.

Results: The serum IL-10 concentration in the SJS/TEN group at the time of admission was 8.4 pg/ml, not different from the EM group and the HCs group, and between the SJS and TEN groups. At the time of epithelialization, the serum concentration of IL-10 decreased to 4.9 pg/ml (p>0.05). The serum concentration of IL-12 in the SJS/TEN group was higher than that in the EM group (p<0.001) but similar to the HCs group. At the time of epithelialization, the serum concentration of IL-12 decreased compared to the time of admission (p<0.01). The serum concentration of IL-17A at the time of admission of the SJS/TEN group was 0.6 pg/ml, not different from that of the EM group (0.4 pg/ml), with p>0.05; and equivalent to the HCs group. At the time of epithelialization, the concentration of IL-17A increased, higher than that at the time of admission (p>0.05).

Conclusion: In the SJS/TEN group, the serum IL-12 concentration was higher than that in the EM group, at the time of admission, this concentration was higher than that at the time of epithelialization. Serum levels of IL-10 and IL-17A in the SJS/TEN group were not higher than those in the EM group and there was no significant change according to the clinical progression of SJS/TEN.
