Abstract

Objective: Comparative efficacy between narrowband UVB (311nm) and excimer lamp (MEL 308 nm) in the treatment of vitiligo.

Subjects and research methods: Subjects are 30 patients who diagnosed with vitiligo, visited the National Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology from 07/2020 to 01/2022. Research methods: prospective study, before and after comparison clinical trial.

Result: This comparative study showed an earlier repigmentation effect of excimer lamp compared with narrow band UVB in the treatment of vitiligo. In the study, we did not find a relationship between the treatment response of each method with the characteristics of the lesion location, disease duration, skin type, age, and sex. Undesirable effects during treatment such as the redness of skin or itching, burning, darkening on the skin around the lesion and no abnormality in blistering, the reinfection of herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Conclusion: This study supports the hypothesis that excimer lamp (MEL) may be more effective than narrow band UVB phototherapy in the treatment of vitiligo.
