Abstract

Objectives: Survey of Mycoplasma genitalium infection incidence and description of clinical characteristics, factors related to Mycoplasma genitalium infection in patients visiting and counseling for sexually transmitted diseases at the National Hospital of Dermatology

Subjects and methods: a cross-sectional study, 664 patients who visited and consulted for sexually transmitted diseases and agreed to be tested to identify 11 sexually transmitted agents simultaneously.

Results: M. genitalium was detected in 6.5% (43/664) of patients (male, 8.1%; female, 2.9%). Among patients infected with MG, 10 (23.3%) were co-infected with other agents. Specifically, it was co-infected with UU\/UP (16.3%), MH (7.0%), HPV 6\/11 (7.0%), CT (4.7%) and TV (2.3%). There were no cases of co-infection with NG, HSV 1\/2, HIV, and Syphilis. The incidence of M. genitalium among symptomatic patients was 12.7% (29\/229). The clinical manifestations of M. genitalium are atypical, which can be seen in many other pathologies. The factors involved are quite similar to other sexually transmitted agents. Men were significantly associated with M. genitalium infection (OR = 4.90 (1.92 – 12.50)) and clinical symptom presentation was also significantly associated with M. genitalium infection (OR = 6.22 (3.04 – 12.73)).

Conclusions: M. genitalium is sexually transmitted at 6.5% (8.1% in men and 2.9% in women, respectively). Among symptomatic patients, the incidence of M. genitalium was 12.7% (29/229). The clinical manifestations of the disease are easily mistaken for other sexually transmitted agents, which do not have specific clinical symptoms. Specific PCR testing for symptomatic patients to detect M. genitalium infection may be necessary.
