Objectives: To determine the prevalence of autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) and investigate the association between AITD and the characteristics of patients with vitiligo in Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Dermato-Venereology from September 2020 to May 2021.
Subjects and methods: We performed cross-sectional study on 120 patients in Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Dermato-Venereology at the time of the study. AITD were diagnosed by thyroid dysfunction (increasing or decreasing of TSH) associated with high titer of autoimmune thyroid autoantibodies (TPOAb, TRAb) in blood sample.
Results: age range from 4 to 78 with greater proportion of female. Median age of onset was 32,50 (IQR: 18 – 47,75), and median duration was 2 years (IQR: 0,92 – 5,00). Positivity of TPOAb and TRAb were 20,00% and 10,83%, respectively. Prevalence of AITD was 7,5%. Positive TPOAb was associated with vitiliginous lesions of the upper limbs, trichrome vitiligo, affected body surface (BSA). Positive TRAb was associated with female gender and trichrome vitiligo.
Conclusions: Prevalence of positive thyroid antibodies and AITD in patients with vitiligo in this study is compatible with previous studies around the world. Positive thyroid autoantibodies are associated with some epidemiological and clinical characteristics of vitiligo patients.
