Abstract

Objectives: Evaluate the effectiveness of treating genital warts with CO2 Laser according to the risk level of HPV strains.

Materials and methods: Intervention study comparing before and after, conducted on 153 patients diagnosed with genital warts and HPV type determined at the National Hospital of Dermatology and Vereneology from September 2022 to August 2023. Treatment using CO2 Laser, monitor and handle complications if any. Evaluate results based on completely clean lesions at week 8 and 12. Monitor disease recurrence at week 24. Analyze results according to each group of patients infected with high-risk and low-risk viruses.

Results: Of the 153 patients studied, 58.8% were infected with low-risk HPV, 41.2% were high-risk. There is no difference in the severity between 2 groups. The low-risk HPV group has a complete cure rate after 12 weeks of 92.2% and a recurrence rate after 12 weeks of 28.2%. In the high-risk HPV group, the results were similar: 90,5% of patients were completely cured after 12 weeks of treatment and 25,8% of patients had a recurrence after 12 weeks. There was no difference in cure rate and recurrence rate between the 2 groups.

Conclusion: Using CO2 Laser to treat genital warts gives relatively good results and no serious complications. The results obtained were no different between the high-risk HPV groups and the low-risk HPV groups.
